The Man from U.N.C.L.E – Opening Titles

What is the purpose of the moving images sequence?

The opening title begins with a black background and a red line which continues throughout the film title. This represents the Berlin wall splitting East and West Germany. The film title is also telling the viewer the story starts from when the end of Second World War leading up to 1964 when the movie is set in. The colour red that runs through the tile is symbolic to the soviets, and is setting the mood and the era the film is set in. you can tell from this it is going to be an action film and involve secret agents. They are trying to tell the story in a quick and bite size way for the viewer to understand the background.

Why have motion graphs/ visual effects been used?
The title scene is simply constructed, they have used motion graphic to tell the storey rather than having someone narrating it. I really like the way they have incorporated archived footage and have it animated in the newspaper articles. What also looks good is the way they have included historical headlines which are bold and promedent.

What is the graphical style?
The graphic style gives the impression of communism, with its bold red colour fighting against the black background, cold war. It is simplistic in its look and feel. There is not a lot of information been thrown at you but it is enough information to visually understand what it is about. It also has a classy and sleek secret agent feel to it.

The typography used looks old fashioned and dated however it is in keeping with the era the film is set in. The typography used is bold and stands out against the black background with it being in the colour yellow. It also continues when the animated title has gone and you are left with the film footage it looks classy, sleek and edgy,

The colours used are simple throughout consists of four colours black, red, yellow and white.

What is the animation style of graphics?
All the archive footage has been well integrated into the film and has a smooth, sleek, classy feel to it. Some parts of it are fast when they are showing multiple photographs.

How are the video and graphic combined?

The main feature is the animated red line is quite clever and brings the hold film title together. They have also included archived footage to add the historic element. They would have used multiple layers to crate the finish look to this film tile as well incorporating the main film footage. All of this looks well balance.

I like they way they have integrated the red line onto the film footage which depicts the parts of East and West Berlin wall which is located by checkpoint Charlie. This is where the hole film is starting from is significant to the story of the film.

What is nice about this film title is the way the camera zoom into the red line where they have the archived footage it looks like realm of film in a dark room.

How does the combination of these factors help serve the purpose for which the piece has been created?
The simplistic view to this film title works because if there was too much happening, it would not have the same feel to it. Adding elements of history to the film tilts help the viewer to understood and also set the sense and mood of the film without bombarding them with too much information.
